As many of you may know, the Whitney has engaged Renzo Piano to design an addition to our historic Marcel Breuer building, and to help renovate and enhance the entire Museum. When we began the architectural selection process, we looked closely at the ways the Museum had grown and tried to envision the Whitney of the future. There was wide agreement among the trustees on the selection committee, led by Board member Melva Bucksbaum, that the quality of the interior spaces for exhibiting art must be the primary concern. With that in mind, the selection committee reviewed the qualifications of more than fifty architectural firms, interviewed twelve of them, and chose Renzo Piano Building Workshop by unanimous vote.“Renzo Piano has designed some of the most beautiful interior museum spaces in the world,” said Bucksbaum. “He brings a remarkable sensitivity to the special character of the Whitney, our neighborhood, and our desire to create a place of great receptivity for artists and audience
