Alternative High Schools - Landmark School, New York
Landmark High School is a progressive school committed to helping kids examine the world thoughtfully and critically. It belongs to the Coalition of Essential Schools, a network of like-minded small schools, that require portfolios -- compilations of student work that demonstrate mastery of a subject in several different ways. Portfolio assessments, rather than standardized tests, measure students' progress. There are eight required portfolios. Students, together with their faculty advisors, select topics for their portfolios early in their academic careers at Landmark. The portfolios are presented at the end of the senior year to a committee of three faculty members. The portfolios in the core subject areas (Literature, Mathematics, Science and Social Science) include a required presentation and defense by the student of his or her work before the committee.
